A visit to Giusti Garden, Verona, Italy inspired this wood relief block print on acid-free Japanese Mulberry rice paper. The garden dates from the fifteenth century and is one of the great Renaissance gardens of Europe. Giusti garden conceals and reveals parterres, hedge mazes, statuary, and shaped lemon trees behind a perimeter of majestic, sixty foot tall cypress trees on about twelve foot centers. Walking outside on the perimeter of the gardens, these cypresses create for the visitor a drama of vertical spaces, advancing, receding, compressing or expanding. A long central path goes several hundred feet to the back of the garden, and a portal admits a climb to the top of a cliff at the back, from which point the whole of Verona unfolds below.
The print is from a single block, inked black, and transferred to rice paper by hand rubbing. The edition is of 25 prints.
